Who is Zombie Walk : San Diego?

Saturday, August 31st, 2019

[Some coding issues ate some of the pages on the site and when I have time… that’ll get fixed. Until then, here’s the “About” section of the page, transferred to a temporary holding place…]

Our first walk, on June 30, 2007, in Balboa Park was a total undead success, with over 120 zombies shuffling their way down El Prado. The second walk took place at Comic-Con, in 2007, where the zombie horde infiltrated thousands of the living and had sightings of George Romero, Brian Posehn, and many others along the route. We also made the San Diego Union-Tribune front page!

From 2007-2019, ZW:SD held dozens of walks and other events throughout America’s Finest City; with several benefiting the San Diego Food Bank, Toys for Tots, local military families, and local unhoused families.  We participated in Thrill The World; played zombie kickball; were featured on San Diego Living, Fox 5 Morning News (our favorite!!), as well as many other news programs; entertained Ocean Beach & the Gaslamp Quarter with undead caroling for the holidays; helped promote Zombieland (which made the front page of CNN.com) and The Walking Dead; took over Hollywood for a night; appeared in a music video for Rat City Riot; and partied at the House of Blues with the cast of MTV’S “The Real World” (some of whom walked with us in 2011, while filming the show). We even helped with a successful marriage proposal!

In 2019, we held our thirteenth and final walk during Comic-Con… a tradition we have sadly but finally laid to rest. We are honored to have been considered one of the “ten essential Comic-Con must-sees“, according to the LA Times.

Our walks included zombies of all ages and backgrounds, as we always encouraged participation from anyone who was interested in letting go of reality for a couple hours and having a great time. Our walks had a set of guidelines from the beginning, intended to keep events not only fun, but as safe & pleasant as possible for both participants and the public. The horde was always met with smiles & laughter and intrigued passerby who were curious about why we walked and how they could join in the shambling good times.

Whether we had a dozen zombies or over 2000, our walks were always a screamin’ good time…. and always remember the motto of America’s Finest Undead: THE MORE THE SCARIER!

So, if you’re someone who saw us on the streets of San Diego or heard about us from a friend and were wondering the whys and hows… welcome!

Photographing/Videoing the Zombie Horde

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

Every walk, especially around Comic-Con, we receive many requests from photographers and videographers looking to capture the zombies via their chosen medium. And we are happy to oblige almost all requests, however, we ask photographers and videographers – both professional & amateur – familiarize themselves with the following:

* I’m a photographer/videographer and would like to take pictures of/film the walk. Can I? Where can I go to do this?
Yes, we love photos & video. Zombies are hams and we enjoy playing to the cameras. Unfortunately, we do not have a specific staging area for most of our walks. If we do have one, it will be included in the individual walk details. If there is no such information, please plan on tagging along with the group; remember to not stop our group at any time and don’t block the flow of regular foot/vehicle traffic. Please do not ask zombies – even small groups or individuals – to stop “for a quick picture” along the walk route, as they will fall behind the horde and it creates more chaos than already exists (as well as impeding the flow of traffic).

* Where can I best view the zombies?
This depends on the walk route. We don’t have a regular walk route, other than when we’re in the Gaslamp Quarter. For Comic-Con, we generally stick to 5th Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter. For these walks, we highly suggest patronizing one of the MANY fine eating establishments along 5th Avenue and asking for patio seating. You will get a GREAT view of the zombies and enjoy a delicious meal at the same time!

* Can I take photos or video of your zombies to sell and/or promote my killer item/idea/movie?
You are NOT welcome to use ANY photos or video you have taken at the walk/event for commercial purposes unless you have permission (a signed release) from ZombieWalk:SanDiego in advance AND you have the subject(s)/their guardian(s) sign a model release. If you or anyone you know shoots pictures and/or video for non-commercial or commercial purposes, please contact us afterward, so that we can post it (with credit and a link to your site, of course)! Zombies love to see themselves in action.

* Can I hire your zombies to promote my killer item/idea or participate in my zombie movie/photoshoot/etc.?
YES! We regularly cast zombies from all over southern California, for everything from music videos to movies to web series (+ everything in between) and to participate in guerrilla marketing solutions & promotional events. Feel free to send us a message with specific details on your project and we’ll get back to you ASAP. We’re also available for photoshoots, should your portfolio need some undead awesomeness!

This is what we advise our zombies of, as participants in the walk:

* Having your photo taken as a participant:
By participating in the walk, you acknowledge that you are aware that face and/or likeness will be posted all over the internet and elsewhere and that you’re cool with it. We will point out our zombie-approved photographers at the beginning of each walk (onward from October 2010).

Please ask for credentials and contact information from anyone taking your photo. Make sure to ask if they are taking it for commercial purposes. This means they will be profiting off of your image in some manner, whether attempting to sell you the print or selling the digital image file to you or other people.

You have a right to refuse to participate in the photograph if it is for commercial purposes and/or if they will not show you their credentials. Do not allow them to tell you differently. Feel free to block the shot (as long as you don’t touch the photographer or their equipment) by holding your hand or a prop up to block your face or by turning your back or by walking away.

We do not encourage commercial photography at our events, because we know you put in a lot of time, effort, and money into outfits & makeup, so we disagree with the idea of photographers being able to make a large profit and not sharing it with you for your hard work. The walks/events are for YOU to have FUN, not for them to pay their bills :)

—–

The zombie participants have the right to refuse your photo/video request. Please respect that. Do not chase the zombies, do not ask them to do anything which violates our walk guidelines or actual laws. Use your common sense and be respectful of the horde. We hold these walks for the participants and spectators to have fun. Not so you can pay your bills or get free action shots for your zombie movie from unpaid & uncredited (and unauthorized) extras. If you are press/media, please be sure to credit us properly (ZombieWalk:SanDiego) and consider including a link to our website and/or our Facebook. It would be greatly appreciated.

As long as you are willing to follow the above guidelines, we are more than willing to have you accompany us on our walk and we look forward to eating… errr… meeting you!

Zombiewalk Safety Guidelines

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

These are the guidelines we have for every walk. We know this sounds like a bunch of buzzkill rules, but we’re looking out for the best interests of you, the public, and the entire walk group in general. We want to continue holding walks – because they’re FUN! – so these are the guidelines that we ask be followed. The walks have had the same guidelines since we started in San Diego and they are very similar to the guidelines of walks held around the world (and have been the basis for many other groups)… we’re not being fascist, we promise!

We are here to have fun, not be a nuisance. If being a nuisance is your brand of fun… zombiewalk isn’t for you! :)

* Zombies shuffle and lurch slowly :
Zombies don’t have/use cell phones. Zombies don’t talk or scream or shriek or howl – they moan or grunt. Zombies move in a slow, halted manner and don’t run, skip, or cartwheel.

* Keep blood/makeup/props on your clothing & body :
If you intentionally or unintentionally leave it somewhere else, it can be considered vandalism. You don’t want that ticket. Try not to bring extra blood or supplies with you. If you make a mess, you are legally responsible for it and you may give the walk a bad reputation and will prevent future walks from taking place. As of 2019: Please DO NOT bring blood and/or extra supplies/makeup with you. If we see it, you will be asked to put it away or leave. This is due to restrictions at our meeting spot.

* OBEY ALL TRAFFIC LAWS & SIGNS! :
Do not block foot or auto traffic, as it is a safety risk and can also be illegal depending on the situation. If you are requested by SDPD or the walk director to change directions and/or disperse, please do so immediately upon request.

As of 2019: We also ask that you walk no more than 2×2 when on the sidewalk and be prepared to walk single-file, so as to not impede pedestrians.

* Don’t approach or touch anyone not associated with the walk :
Keep your hands and feet inside the vehic… keep ’em to yourself and out of people’s faces (do not to reach out at members of the public as we pass them… this is legally considered threatening behavior). As of 2019: Please do NOT reach out toward any person, vehicle, etc. – please keep your arms at your sides, to allow for more pedestrian space and for safety’s sake. Thank you!

* Please do not lean over any barriers/fences, enter any shops, lean into doorways/entryways, or pound on/touch windows :
These are all borderline illegal behaviors. If law enforcement sees you doing it, they may ticket or arrest you. If they don’t see you, retailers and restaurateurs may lobby to ban zombiewalks because you’re annoying them and their customers, so please refrain from those activities for the sake of our walk’s positive reputation.

* Things to leave at home :
– Weapons… No fake ones, no real ones, no imaginary invisible ones. You will be asked to put them back in your car or get rid of them. Zombies do not carry weapons anyway!
– PA systems, stereos, boomboxes, megaphones, etc… Amplified sound requires a permit and isn’t necessary for our walk.
– Alcohol/drugs… We ask that you refrain from partaking in any mind-altering substances before/during the walk, due to public intoxication laws. This includes drinking, smoking, vaping, snorting, sniffing, injecting, or whatever method of non-sobriety in which you possibly partake. If you show up under the influence, you’ll be asked to leave immediately. We ask this for your safety and the safety of others, not to mention that being intoxicated tends to make you do irresponsible things and we don’t want irresponsible things happening on our walk – the walks are fun enough without being drunk/high, we promise!

* Photographers & Videographers :
We welcome all photographers/videographers and legitimate press/journalists to our events! As long as you don’t stop our group at any time and don’t get in our way or block the flow of regular foot/vehicle traffic, you are welcome to take pictures & video.

As of 2019: Please do NOT come to the meeting location unless specifically invited. This is for safety’s sake and logistics. If you want to get great pictures/video, please go to Fifth Avenue and look for the horde. We’ll provide you ample content there and it will be far better than at the meeting location.

You are NOT welcome to sell ANY photos or video you have taken at the walk/event unless you have permission from ZombieWalk:SanDiego in advance AND you have the subject(s)/their guardian(s) sign a model release. If you or anyone you know shoots pictures and/or video, please contact us afterward, so that we can post it (with credit and a link to your site, of course)! Zombies love to see themselves in action.

If you are interested in setting up a private shoot for commercial or portfolio purposes, please contact us and we’d be happy to set something up for you! :)

* Participating in the walk:
By participating in the zombiewalk, you do so at your own risk. Despite providing guidelines and trying our best to make sure that everyone has a good time, we are not responsible for your behavior, activities, or actions; including any injuries or trauma that may occur during your participation.

We do ask that you please follow all laws of the City of San Diego & State of California and please maintain a solid level of courtesy & common sense to refrain from giving the public a negative image of the group. If we see you breaking the law and/or violating these very simple guidelines, you will be asked to leave. If the offense is dangerous or threatening, you will be reported to the nearest law enforcement official.

Again, we’re not trying to be a buzzkill, but we want you to have fun in the most safe & enjoyable manner possible – and we want the public to be entertained by us, not threatened or offended! =)
